Tennessee has certified ignition interlock installers in cities across the state. A person required by a court or the Tennessee Department of Safety to have an approved ignition interlock installed must use one of these approved installers for the alcohol breathalyzer device. This means the driver of the vehicle with an ignition interlock device (IID) installed is required to blow into the device before starting the car. If a certain level of alcohol is detected the vehicle will not start. The costs of installation, maintenance, and monitoring fall on the user of the ignition interlock device. Other ignition interlock fees may also be required in Tennessee.
