Drivers convicted of repeat alcohol-related driving convictions are required to install an ignition interlock device (IID), often referred to as a breathalyzer interlock, prior to reinstatement of driving privileges. Further, some individuals may be eligible to have an ignition interlock device installed in order to obtain early reinstatement of driving privileges.
The IID is attached to the vehicle’s ignition and requires the driver to submit a breath sample in the breathalyzer device before starting the vehicle. If the sample breath exceeds a preset blood alcohol content (BAC) level the IID will not allow the vehicle to start.
The driver seeking reinstatement is responsible for acquiring installation of the IID and for routine maintenance and monitoring. The costs of the device may vary from one interlock provider to the next. The list below includes the four IID companies that are approved for use in Colorado. Contact information is included in order to find an installation center near you.
