Virginia DMV certifies IID service providers throughout the state.

Installation of a breathalyzer interlock is required for Virginia drivers convicted of two DUIs within five years. In addition, a judge may require an IID be installed for any person convicted of a DUI. The costs of installation and monitoring are payed by the offender, though there is an indigent offender program for those who cannot afford the costs.

In Virginia, an Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP) case manager will arrange an appointment for the installation of the breathalyzer interlock, or ignition interlock device (IID), at a nearby service center. The offender will have 30 days to have the IID installed. After installation, the offender will send proof of installation to the case manager, and the ignition interlock installer will send a report to the case manager also confirming installation.

IID service providers and the breathalyzer device itself must be certified by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. As mentioned previously the ASAP case manager will arrange an appointment with a certified service provider.

Nebraska has approved several breathalyzer interlocks from eight different providers. The devices are referred to as breath alcohol ignition interlock devices (BAIID) and an appointment for installation can be made by contacting one of the BAIID providers listed below. LA ignition interlock manufacturers have installation sites in counties throughout the state.

The State of Louisiana requires the installation of an ignition interlock device (IID), sometimes referred to as an in-car breathalyzer or breathalyzer interlock, as a condition of reinstatement of driving privileges for DWI/DUI offenders. The device must be installed in all vehicles the driver will be operating, not just the vehicles the driver owns.

An IID requires the driver to submit a breath sample into a breathalyzer device attached to the car’s ignition. If the breathalyzer detects a blood alcohol content (BAC) above a preset level the vehicle will not start. Further, the IID will require “rolling retests” during the operation of the vehicle to prevent attempts to bypass the breath test device.

The driver must pay for the cost of installation, which is generally around $125, and the monthly calibration and maintenance fees, which cost about $65 a month. Prices for IID installation, calibration and maintenance may vary from one provider to the next.

A driver seeking reinstatement must select an ignition interlock provider from those approved by the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles. NJ has mandatory IID laws for repeat DUI offenders.

New Jersey requires the installation of an ignition interlock device (IID) if a person is convicted of a f DUI offense and recorded a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .15% or higher or a person is convicted of repeat DUI offenses. It is also within the discretion of the judge to require an IID be used for other offenders, though it may not be required.

IIDs are also commonly referred to as breathalyzer interlocks or breath alcohol ignition interlock devices (BAIID). The device is essentially a breathalyzer that attaches to the ignition of the vehicle and will not allow the car to be started if the user’s BAC is over a preset limit. In New Jersey that limit is .05%.

If you are required to have a car breathalyzer interlock installed in your vehicle you will be sent a notice and instructions on how to obtain the IID. Below is a list that provides the manufacturers of IIDs that have been approved by New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission. There are several companies that provide IID models suitable for use on a motorcycle.

Ignition interlock devices (IIDs) can be installed on motorcycles. There are several companies that provide IIDs, or car breathalyzers, that can be used on a motorcycle. However, if required to have an ignition interlock on your vehicle by law a motorcycle may not be an option.

Ignition interlock laws vary from state to state. In some states an individual required to have a breathalyzer interlock may use a motorcycle so long as it has the device installed. Other states, however, do not allow drivers required to use IIDs to drive a motorcycle. Massachusetts, for instance, does not allow the use of a motorcycle with an IID while Kentucky does.

Therefore, if in a state such as Massachusetts that does not allow for the installation of an ignition interlock on a motorcycle, a driver is not allowed to operate a motorcycle while required to use an ignition interlock device.

No where is a motorcycle an exception if a driver is required to use a breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID).

Oregon not only allows the use of ignition interlock devices on motorcycles but provides information on which vendors provide motorcycle installation. The following cities in Oregon have vendors certified and able to install IIDs on motorcycles:  Cascade Locks, Clackamas, Eugene, Hillsboro, Longview, Medford, Roseburg, Salem, and Tigard. There are IIDs that can be installed on your motorcycle, but you need to make sure your state allows the use of an IID breathalyzer on a motorcycle before installing and driving.

Massachusetts has approved six ignition interlock vendors.

Massachusetts has approved six vendors to supply ignition interlock devices (IID), also known as in car breathalzyers, to meet the requirements for IID installation.  An ignition interlock breathalyzer measures the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) and if it exceeds a preset limit, .02 in Massachusetts, the device prevents the vehicle from starting.

Massachusetts requires the use of ignition interlock devices in the vehicles driven by certain individuals.  These include those convicted of two or more OUIs and eligible for a hardship license or license reinstatement, those who have been ordered to use an IID by a court, and those for whom a court has reinstated their license after a suspension of five years or more for a Chemical Test Refusal.

Michigan has approved several ignition interlock providers.

Michigan has authorized installers for Ignition Interlock Devices (IID), also called in car breathalyzers. The responsibility for Ignition Interlock installation and the costs of installation, maintenance, and calibration belongs to the person required to have the device in order to regain driving privileges. Interlock installation and maintenance costs may be reduced for people who meet certain financial guidelines. To drive with a restricted driver license a convicted habitual drunk driver must have an ignition interlock installed on their vehicle for the first year of the license restriction and must submit proof of installation to a local branch of the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office.

Ohio has approved ignition interlock devices.

Ohio requires certain OVI (DUI) offenders to have an IID installed in their vehicle before receiving a driver license reinstatement. Below is a list of Arizona certified breathalyzer interlock providers for those required to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle. An ignition interlock system device ensures that a driver of a vehicle does not have a blood alcohol content (BAC) above a preset limit. The driver blows into a breathalyzer which tests the driver’s BAC and if the limit is exceeded the ignition interlock device (IID) will not allow the vehicle to start.

Nearly all states, including Arizona, have laws requiring the use of IIDs by DUI/DWI offenders. Drivers may be required to have an ignition interlock by a court order or in order to obtain an Arizona Special Ignition Interlock Restricted Driver License (SIIRDL). The offender, if required to have an IID installed, is responsible for paying for the installation as well as routine monitoring and maintenance.
