NJ has mandatory IID laws for repeat DUI offenders.
New Jersey requires the installation of an ignition interlock device (IID) if a person is convicted of a f DUI offense and recorded a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .15% or higher or a person is convicted of repeat DUI offenses. It is also within the discretion of the judge to require an IID be used for other offenders, though it may not be required.
IIDs are also commonly referred to as breathalyzer interlocks or breath alcohol ignition interlock devices (BAIID). The device is essentially a breathalyzer that attaches to the ignition of the vehicle and will not allow the car to be started if the user’s BAC is over a preset limit. In New Jersey that limit is .05%.
If you are required to have a car breathalyzer interlock installed in your vehicle you will be sent a notice and instructions on how to obtain the IID. Below is a list that provides the manufacturers of IIDs that have been approved by New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission. Contact is information is also included and these providers should be able to inform you of an installation center in your area.
